A BREFE INTRODUCTION

OF THE AUTHOUR,

FOR THE MORE PARFYTE UNDERSTANDYNG OF HIS FYRST AND SECONDE BOKES

        The diffyculte of the frenche tong, whiche maketh it so harde to be lerned by them of our nation, resteth chefely in thre thynges, In the diversyte of pronunciation, that is betwene us and them, in theyr analogie and maner of congruite, where in they be moche more parfyte and exquisyte than we be, and moche more approche towardes the parfection of the latin tong, than we do, And thyrdly in theyr propertes of spekyng where in theyr phrasys be dyfferent frome ours, and letteth us, that thoughe we shulde gyve worde for worde, yet the sens shulde moche differ betwene our tong and theyrs, of whiche thre thynges here brefely and by maner of an introduction to entreate. The frenche men in theyr pronunciation do chefly regarde and covet thre thynges. To be armonyous in theyr speking. To be brefe and sodayne in soundyng of theyr wordes, avoydyng all maner of harshenesse in theyr pronunciation, and thirdly to gyve every worde that they abyde and reste upon, theyr most audible sounde. To be armonious in theyr spekyng, they use one thyng which none other nation dothe, but onely they, that is to say, they make a maner of modulation inwardly, for they forme certayne of theyr vowelles in theyr brest, and suffre nat the sounde of them to passe out by the mouthe, but to assende from the brest straight up to the palate of the mouth, and so by reflection yssueth the sounde of them by the nose. To be brefe and sodayne, and to avoyde all maner harshenesse, whiche myght happen whan many consonantes come betwene the vowelles, If they all shulde have theyr distyncte sounde. 

 Pour être harmonieux dans leur parler, ils utilisent une chose qu'aucune autre nation qu'eux ne fait, ils font une sorte de modulation interne, en ce qu'ils forment certaines de leurs voyelles dans leur poitrine, et ne laissent pas leur son passer par leur bouche, mais le font monter directement de leur poitrine au palais de leur bouche, et ainsi par [résonance] sortent le son [de ces voyelles] par leur nez. Pour être bref et soudain, et pour éviter toute sorte de dureté, qui pourraient arriver lorsque beaucoup de consonnes viennent entre les voyelles. Si elles avaient toutes leur son distinct.
